When I hear someone say they pray to god, I have to ask, which god are they praying to?
I am not being facetious. I am just curious. Is the god a Hindu is praying to the same god as a Mormon is praying to? Is the god a Church of England Anglican is praying to the same god as someone praying to the god in the Church of Christ The Scientist?
How many religions exist on the planet? According to an answer in Quora, there at around 4,300. Does this mean there are 4,300 gods? Or, does one god support 4,300 religions? If so, why? I am not being facetious. I am truly interested in hearing from a believer on this subject.
Why did you choose the church you belong to? Why that church? What do you know that I don’t know that caused you to make that decision? In my opinion, the god of the old testament is a malicious, bigot; a manic, narcissistic, evil being and is also irrational, intolerant, allied to racism, tribalism, and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry. This god also supports genocide, is contemptuous of women and coercive toward children.
The following are just a few excerpts from the christian bible holy book:
Samuel 15:3: “This is what the Lord Almighty says … ‘Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.‘
Psalm 137, which celebrates this terrible revenge: “Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us / He who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.”
God’s test of Abraham in Genesis 22.2, in which Abraham is made to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’
Ephesians 5:22, “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.”
Peter 2:18: “Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.”
Psalm 137:9. This psalm is often omitted from readings in the church: “Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us – he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.”
And these are the words of an all-loving god? And the following are just a few excerpts from the koran holy book:
Surah 27:63 This is what Allah says… “Now go and strike the Infidel and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.”
Surah 34:12 “Happy is he who repays the infidel for what they have done to us – he who seizes their infants and dashes them against the rocks.”
Surah 135:27 “So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. At daybreak, the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door, and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, ‘Get up; let’s go.’ But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.”
Surah 5:22 “A Wife, must submit to her husband as to Allah.”
Surah 21: 7-8 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.”
What thinking person in their right mind would follow these kinds of hateful dictates? These are the words of evil, not the word of some kindly, benevolent overlord. The human race has come a long way in the last 5,000 years. Why do so many of us cling to the superstitious nonsense purported to be the word of some monotheist god who seemed to have suddenly appeared on the scene long, before science; long before the discovery of germs and bacteria and back when we thought the earth was the center of the universe?
Let’s grow up and put the superstition and the puerile nonsense of the so-called “holy” books behind us.
Let’s embrace science and modern medicine and the wonders of the huge universe in which the tiny little planet we live on is just a grain of sand.
If there is a god or a bunch of gods who are all-powerful and all-seeing who we pray to save us from calamities such as hurricanes, pandemics, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, why do these gods allow them to happen in the first place? It is truly infantile to believe in some invisible man in the sky who has never revealed himself in any form or presence (discounting burning bushes) to humans in recorded history.
And a final question: what do these gods have against women?
